What Is Functional Medicine?

What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a personalized approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying and addressing the underlying causes of chronic disease. It is based on the idea that the body functions as a whole system, and that imbalances or dysfunction in one area can affect the entire system.

Functional medicine practitioners take a holistic approach to healthcare, considering the patient's entire medical history, lifestyle, environment, and genetics to identify the root cause of a condition. They also use a wide range of diagnostic tools, including laboratory testing and functional assessments, to understand the patient's unique biochemistry and physiology.

Functional medicine practitioners work with patients to develop customized treatment plans that address the underlying causes of their condition, rather than just treating symptoms. These plans may include a combination of lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise modifications, supplements, and medications.

Some of the chronic conditions that functional medicine practitioners commonly treat include:

  • Autoimmune diseases

  • Diabetes

  • Heart disease

  • Thyroid disorders

  • Hormone imbalance (menopause, peri menopause, infertility)

  • Mental health (depression and anxiety)

Functional medicine is not a replacement for conventional medicine, but it aims to complement it by identifying the underlying causes of chronic diseases, rather than just treating symptoms. It also aims to empower patients to take an active role in their own health and well-being.

Is functional medicine for you?

Functional medicine can be beneficial for everyone! However, it’s not for everyone.

Who it’s not for?

  • Anyone who wants to take pill for their health challenge and expect everything to be fine.

  • Anyone who is not willing to make the lifestyle changes.

  • Anyone who focuses more on their disease than health.

  • Anyone that is closed minded and not open to the possibilities.

  • Anyone not willing to make changes.

  • Anyone who is not a TEAM player.

  • Anyone who thinks that optimal health is an overnight process.

  • Anyone not willing to invest in their health.
